A thrilling touch for Humanity

The Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to add a new touch to the Habitat tri-plex being constructed on Thrill Place in Denver. RMMI member masons from C. Morgen Masonry and Mortenson are working with apprentices from the Masonry Arts program at Front Range Community College to install brick veneer on the outside of the tri-plex. Working with 10,000 brick and other materials donated by A.P. Eberlein Company and Rio Grande Company, the volunteer masons, laborersand apprentices are putting in about475 man-hours on the project. A second team of masons and apprentices will install brick on a Habitat for Humanity duplex next month.
Using brick is a new construction technique for Habitat in Denver. RMMI Technical Director Diane Travis worked with Architect Peter Hynes on the design for the masonry veneer.

The Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute is a nonprofit trade association representing 120 companies in the masonry industry across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Massaro: Bricklayer feted for solid achievements

August 11, 2006 The Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute is going to raise the Barr Saturday.

That's when the organization will present Bud Barr with a lifetime achievement award.

Barr, 80, helped found what became the Masonry Institute, a trade organization for brick and block manufacturers, cement makers and scaffolding companies. He has been a mason or worked with masonry most of his life.

He and longtime friend Dan Berich started working as bricklayers during World War II, when both were juniors at South High School in 1943.

"They were really looking for help," he said. "It's a craft. In those days you couldn't get into it unless you were related."

Industry Leaders Focus on Alliances, Marketing and Advocacy

Alliances, marketing, and advocacy are the key elements to market retention and market expansion for the masonry industry. That's the message that Colorado-based contractors, brick producers, block producers and cement manufacturers heard at the August 2006 annual meeting of the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI).

Mark Hogan, President of the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), Michael Adelizzi, Executive Director of the Mason Contractors of America Association were on hand to present their views and engage in discussions with the audience. Both association leaders began their presentations focusing on the value of industry alliances and what they mean for the members of key industry organizations. Underscoring this, Mike Adelizzi said, "Everything we do together is to advance the industry."
